Rawalpindi, Feb 24 (NationPress) New Zealand spinner Michael Bracewell caused chaos in Bangladesh’s top order, achieving a remarkable four-wicket haul that restricted the opposition to 236/9 during the ICC Champions Trophy match at the Rawalpindi Stadium on Monday.
The off-spinner's outstanding performance, with figures of 4-26 that included 43 dot balls, marked the best-ever statistics by a New Zealand spinner in the tournament's history. Bracewell’s superb 10-over spell kept Bangladesh's innings from gaining any momentum.
The 34-year-old attributed his success to the wind conditions that mirrored his home environment.
"It's a funny situation; once you release the ball, you lose control over what happens at the other end. It was my day today. You have to accept both the highs and lows. It was nice to receive some help from the wind, being from Wellington, it felt like being in familiar surroundings," stated Bracewell.
With the average first innings score at Rawalpindi being 242 and dew expected to influence the second innings, New Zealand stands a strong chance of securing a semifinal spot from Group A with a victory.
Bracewell also noted that batting seemed to become easier towards the conclusion of the first innings, expressing hope that his team would capitalize on the favorable conditions.
"It appeared to ease up towards the end, so we aim for a solid start," he added.
In addition to Bracewell, William O’Rourke contributed with two wickets, while Kyle Jamieson and Matt Henry each claimed one wicket.
For Bangladesh, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was the top scorer with a steady 77, while Jaker Ali provided some late-order support. However, Bangladesh struggled to form partnerships during the death overs, leading to a total of 236/9 in their 50 overs.
