Birmingham, July 1 (NationPress) - The Indian captain faced the press on the brink of the second Test match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which kicks off on July 2 at Edgbaston. He addressed the primary concern among fans: the status of Jasprit Bumrah's availability.
After experiencing a stress fracture in his back during the final Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where Bumrah dominated the Australian batting lineup, both Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill confirmed that the fast bowler is likely to participate in only three out of the five Tests due to load management.
With India already trailing 0-1 following a five-wicket defeat at Headingley, it remains uncertain whether the team can succeed without Bumrah. Gill stated, “Jasprit Bumrah is available. We are working to find the right balance to take 20 wickets and score runs. The final decision will be made after assessing the pitch today,” during the pre-match press conference.
The young Indian captain also remarked on the challenges posed by Bumrah's absence.
“It’s challenging, but fundamentally, our team consists of the top players in India. It’s tough, but not unattainable. The other players are performing for the country based on their merits. Thankfully, we have an extensive talent pool, which enables us to compete internationally,” he added.
India's struggles in the first Test can be attributed to subpar fielding. Numerous dropped catches led Gill's team to become the first in Test history to lose despite scoring five centuries over both innings.
Gill elaborated on the difficulties of slip fielding in English conditions and expressed hope that the first Test was an anomaly for his squad.
“The ball swings behind the wicket, making it hard to track at times. We are aware of these challenges and have practiced diligently. It was a unique match where we dropped five to seven catches, and we hope this won’t happen again,” Gill explained.
