Birmingham, July 2 (NationPress) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri expressed his disbelief regarding Jasprit Bumrah's absence from the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston. He stated that it is quite hard to accept that Bumrah is not playing.
With India trailing 1-0 in the five-match series, Bumrah has been rested for this match due to workload management, with Akash Deep stepping in for him. During the toss, captain Shubman Gill explained that the management believes Lord’s will provide Bumrah with more suitable conditions to excel, but Shastri was not pleased with this decision.
“This match is crucial; the team has had a week off. I’m quite surprised that Bumrah is not participating in this game. The decision should be made by the captain and coaching staff, not left to the players. This is an essential game for the series, and he should be on the field,” Shastri commented.
“Lord’s can wait. This is the match where you need to respond immediately. Play this one to level the series at 1-1, and then let him choose if he wants to rest at Lord’s. Do you think he would miss the chance to play at Lord’s if India wins? Absolutely not! Given India’s recent performance, this Test match is extremely significant.”
“India has lost three matches against New Zealand, three against Australia, and the first Test here. They need to get back to winning. To have the world’s best fast bowler sitting out after a week’s rest is hard to comprehend,” Shastri said during a broadcast on Sky Sports.
With Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy brought in for B Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur, India's batting lineup has been bolstered. However, without Bumrah, the team appears markedly different at Edgbaston. Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad also voiced his surprise regarding Bumrah's absence.
“A week off is sufficient for a fast bowler. (Bumrah's absence) surprises me, especially since he stated before the series that he would only play three of the five Tests. They need to keep their strategy close to their chest and take it week by week. They will want Bumrah for Lord’s due to the potential for movement in the air, so is it worth the risk to leave him out here?” he added.
