New Delhi, July 2 (NationPress) Aaron Finch, the former captain of Australia, has expressed his astonishment regarding India’s choice to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test at Edgbaston. He questioned the logic behind sidelining the world’s leading fast bowler during such a pivotal match.
As India faces a 0-1 deficit in the five-match Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy series, Bumrah’s absence, being the spearhead of India’s bowling lineup, has incited discussions among fans and analysts.
“If Bumrah is fit, why wouldn’t you select the best bowler globally?” Finch tweeted on X (formerly Twitter) shortly post-toss. “At minimum, Kuldeep should be included in the XI if you’re anxious about securing 20 wickets. He may be pricier, but he’s the next most aggressive option!”
At the toss, India’s captain Shubman Gill disclosed that Bumrah's exclusion was a decision based on workload management, aiming to preserve him for the Lord’s Test, where conditions are anticipated to favor him. Akash Deep has been brought in as Bumrah's replacement for his Test debut.
India made two additional changes, introducing Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy in place of B Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur, which strengthens the batting order but arguably diminishes the bowling strength.
This decision has raised eyebrows beyond just Finch.
Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad expressed his surprise at India taking the field without their most formidable weapon, especially after Bumrah's impressive performance in Leeds.
“A week is ample for a fast bowler to rest. (Bumrah’s absence) astonishes me, and his statement prior to the series about participating in only three of the five Tests is also surprising. It’s essential to keep such strategies discreet and approach each week as it unfolds. They will definitely want Bumrah at Lord’s due to the potential movement in the air, so can they afford to risk him here?” he remarked.
