Manila, June 1 (NationPress) Albert Capellas has stepped down from his role as the head coach of the Philippines, citing personal reasons, just ahead of the nation's AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Qualifiers against Tajikistan on June 10.
Capellas, who succeeded Tom Saintfiet in September, guided the Philippines to the semi-finals of the ASEAN Football Federation Championship three months later. His assistant coach, Carles Cuadrat, will take over as the interim head coach.
Cuadrat's latest position was with East Bengal, where he secured the 2023 Indian Super Cup. He previously enjoyed success in the Indian Super League with Bengaluru FC.
“My extraordinary journey as head coach of the Philippines has reached its conclusion, and I wish to extend my sincere thanks to everyone involved, especially the players and staff,” stated Capellas.
“Together, we have embarked on an inspiring journey and demonstrated that Filipino football boasts a promising generation of young talents capable of achieving significant pride and success for the nation.”
The Philippines secured a 4-1 victory over the Maldives in their opening game of Group A in the third round of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 under Capellas's leadership. Timor-Leste is also part of the group.
The country is aiming to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup Finals for the second time, having made its debut in the United Arab Emirates in 2019.
“We appreciate Capellas' contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” remarked Philippines team manager Freddie Gonzalez. “We will continue to push forward.”
“Albert has left us with a strategy to follow, and we are thankful for his decision to bring Carles on board, ensuring continuity for the foundation Albert has laid.”
