New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) The Boston Celtics, currently the reigning NBA champions, have finalized a deal for a remarkable USD 6.1 billion sale to a consortium led by William Chisholm, co-founder of the private equity firm Symphony Technology Group, the franchise revealed on Thursday.
This transaction, pending approval from the NBA Board of Governors, would establish a new benchmark for the most expensive sports team acquisition in North America, eclipsing the USD 6.05 billion paid for the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023.
“Bill is an outstanding individual and a genuine Celtics supporter, having grown up in the Boston area. His passion for the team and the city of Boston, combined with his rapport with the Celtics leadership, positions him as an ideal candidate to become the next Governor and controlling owner of the franchise,” stated Celtics majority owner Wyc Grousbeck.
Grousbeck will continue in his roles as CEO and Governor of the Celtics, managing team operations until the 2027-2028 NBA season.
Along with Chisholm and Grousbeck, the new ownership group features business leaders and philanthropists from Boston, including current Celtics owner Rob Hale and Bruce A. Beal Jr., among others.
“Having grown up on the North Shore and pursued my education in New England, I have been a devoted Celtics fan throughout my life. I recognize the significance of the Celtics to the city of Boston—the team’s impact on the community is unparalleled compared to any other city in the nation,” expressed Chisholm.
“I also acknowledge the responsibility that comes with leading this organization for the people of Boston, and I am ready to embrace this challenge.”
The Celtics, who secured their 18th NBA championship last year, thus breaking their tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the most titles in NBA history, announced their decision to put the team up for sale last July.
