Dubai, March 9 (NationPress) The 2025 Champions Trophy may mark the conclusion of an era for the Indian white-ball squad, with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja facing uncertain futures. This trio had previously announced their retirement from T20 cricket following their victory against South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup final. Fans are now speculating if the first innings against New Zealand in the final was the last opportunity to witness Jadeja's exceptional skills, especially after Kohli embraced the all-rounder following his completion of ten overs.
Many recalled the poignant moment during the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy when Ravichandran Ashwin, one of Jadeja's key teammates, announced his retirement and shared an emotional farewell with Kohli in the dressing room.
Jadeja's only wicket of the day was Tom Latham, with India's spin quartet accounting for five of the seven Kiwi wickets that fell as they posted 251/7 in the first innings.
Having made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2009, Jadeja has since played 203 matches in the format, taking 230 wickets and scoring 8,150 runs.
Conversely, Kohli is renowned as India's 'chasemaster' in ODIs, having frequently anchored the batting lineup. The 36-year-old made his debut against Sri Lanka in Dambulla in 2008 and is currently the third-highest run-scorer in ODIs, trailing only Kumar Sangakkara (14,234) and Sachin Tendulkar (18,426). Out of his 14,180 runs, 8,063 came in the second innings while pursuing targets.
However, India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill dismissed speculation surrounding the retirements of Rohit and Kohli during the pre-match press conference before the final showdown.
