New Delhi, Aug 15 (NationPress) Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca asserts that his team is prepared, but they must prove themselves against Crystal Palace as they kick off their competitive season.
The world champions are set to resume competitive play on Sunday after a demanding pre-season. Maresca has had less than two weeks to train with his squad at Cobham following their triumphant Club World Cup run, yet their friendly matches against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan showcased promising performances.
Crystal Palace, who clinched the FA Cup last season and triumphed over Liverpool in penalties to secure the Community Shield last weekend, is expected to present a more formidable challenge.
‘We believe we are prepared, but we need to experience real competition to confirm that. As mentioned, it’s been a brief break. We will strive to be ready.
“Sunday's match will be quite challenging. [They won] the Community Shield against Liverpool and the FA Cup against Manchester City. They defeated two of England's top teams in the last 15 years in two finals, which illustrates how difficult it will be on Sunday,” Maresca remarked during the pre-match press conference.
Maresca announced that Trevoh Chalobah is fit to face Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener on Sunday and provided updates on the fitness of Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, and Romeo Lavia.
“It was simply too hot for him [against AC Milan],” joked the Blues’ head coach.
Badiashile and Lavia are 'in the process of returning' from their injuries, while a decision on Fofana's availability is still pending.
Levi Colwill will be sidelined after undergoing ACL surgery earlier this month, resulting in an extended absence. Maresca provided an update on the defender ahead of Sunday’s Premier League opener.
“He is fine and understands he will be out for a lengthy period,” Maresca stated. “This is a significant loss for us. We all know how crucial Levi was for us last season and the way we aim to play. We have often stated that we can create opportunities and attack effectively if we can build up correctly, and Levi was integral to our build-up.”
