Chengdu, Aug 5 (NationPress) With just two days remaining until the opening ceremony of the 12th World Games, International World Games Association (IWGA) President Jose Perurena Lopez has announced that Chengdu's preparations have far surpassed expectations, setting the stage for a historic event.
"Two years ago, my expectations were sky-high, but Chengdu has exceeded all of them," Perurena shared with Xinhua on Tuesday. "We assure you that Chengdu will host the best World Games of our lives, thanks to the exceptional quality of the venues, the dedication of the volunteers, and the professionalism of the organizing committee."
The Games' inaugural torch relay, which artfully merges China's rich heritage with modern sportsmanship, left a lasting impression on IWGA leaders. The torch, named "Zhu Meng"—meaning "Bamboo Dream"—symbolizes the pursuit of dreams and was inspired by the bronze sculptures of Sanxingdui and the bamboo forests of Sichuan. The relay commenced at the Sanxingdui Museum, where the flame was ignited using green energy technology by former curators of the site.
The 11-kilometer relay route traversed six cultural landmarks in the cities of Chengdu, Deyang, and Meishan, including the Jinsha Ruins, Chengdu Panda Base, and the Three Su Shrines, as reported by Xinhua.
"This is an easily achievable goal for us," emphasized IWGA CEO Joachim Gossow, highlighting the cultural significance of the relay. Perurena noted that it inspired the local populace and showcased "diverse scenarios, different cities" globally, earning "very, very positive feedback" from international audiences.
The importance of the World Games in promoting sports outside the Olympic framework was underscored by both leaders. Perurena pointed out its role as a testing ground: "We represent sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that are not included in the Olympic Games. They rely on our Games to demonstrate their readiness."
Gossow echoed this sentiment, observing the growing alignment between the two events. "Looking at the IOC's selection of sports for future Olympics, nearly all of them are World Games sports," he noted, challenging existing perceptions. "Being Olympic or non-Olympic does not indicate superiority or inferiority."
Having previously hosted the 2023 FISU World University Games, Chengdu's rapid development has astonished IWGA officials. Gossow, who attended the University Games in Chengdu, remarked: "I'm even more impressed by the extra effort they are putting into promoting the World Games. The venues, the aesthetics of the Games, and all associated services are remarkable."
Adding to the significance of Chengdu's hosting, China will present its largest delegation ever—489 members, including 321 athletes competing in 28 sports. The team will make its debut in 12 sports such as floorball and powerboating, marking China's first participation of para-athletes at the Games.
The Chengdu World Games, scheduled from August 7 to 17, will feature 34 sports, 60 disciplines, and 256 events, with approximately 5,000 athletes from around 110 countries and regions participating.
