Guangzhou (China), May 14 (NationPress) Recently wrapping up in Guangzhou, the 2025 World Athletics Relays saw World Athletics President Sebastian Coe commend the introduction of the 4x100m mixed relay and acknowledge China's ascent as a burgeoning athletics force.
Describing the opening day of the event as “history being made,” Coe noted that despite torrential rain, the event showcased impressive performances, with several national records achieved alongside the debut of the mixed relay.
“While the conditions weren't ideal for spectators or athletes, the competitors persevered. The passionate crowd turned up in large numbers,” Coe remarked, expressing particular enthusiasm for the new event, according to Xinhua.
“Even with the weather challenges, we have demonstrated that this new format will be a fantastic addition to our sport,” he emphasized.
Relays have been integral to Olympic track and field since the first modern Games in 1896. The introduction of the mixed 4x100m relay reflects a gender-integrated competition approach, as Coe highlighted the need to keep the sport dynamic and appealing.
“It’s crucial to recognize that our sport has long embraced gender equality; this isn't a recent development,” he stated, noting balanced participation between boys and girls since his training began at age 11.
“Moreover, we are among the few sports that offer equal prize money to women in both the Diamond League and world championships,” he added, pointing out that the ongoing success of the 4x400m mixed relay underscores the significance of gender equality in athletics.
“The introduction of a new mixed relay is not solely about gender equality; it's about creating an exciting, fast-paced format. We must continue to attract new audiences through such innovations,” Coe affirmed.
The 2025 event also marked the inaugural hosting of the World Athletics Relays in China. “This is the seventh edition, and we’re thrilled to be in Guangzhou, as China plays a vital role in the global development of our sport,” Coe stated.
Guangzhou is part of a wider 2025 athletics agenda in China, which includes the World Indoor Championships and two Diamond League events. In 2027, Yangzhou will host the World Road Running Championships, while Beijing will be the only city to host the World Athletics Championships twice, joining Helsinki and Tokyo.
“This marks the start of an exhilarating three-year journey. I can’t think of any other nation currently hosting as many of our events as China,” Coe expressed with enthusiasm.
When asked about the implications of China’s hosting, Coe was quick to praise their meticulousness. “What they’ve achieved has shown many other organizing committees the value of attention to detail,” he commented. “During my visit to one of the athletes’ hotels, numerous competitors praised the exceptional service they experienced. The organizing committee here is truly world-class.”
Coe also toured the Su Bingtian Speed Centre at Jinan University, a cutting-edge training and research facility named after the renowned Chinese sprinter and Asian 100-meter record holder. He witnessed China’s men’s 4x400m team break the national record, securing direct qualification for the World Championships.
“I spent my first morning in Guangzhou at Su’s center, examining some of the technology utilized, including AI for talent scouting and performance analysis,” he shared. He expressed his inspiration at seeing elite athletes contributing beyond their competitions to elevate the sport and engage future generations.
As a former 4x400m relay runner, Coe was particularly thrilled to witness the Chinese team’s remarkable comeback finish.
Coe concluded on a hopeful note regarding China's ongoing emergence in the global athletics scene.
