Xiamen (China), May 4 (NationPress) China secured the 2025 Sudirman Cup championship by defeating South Korea 3-1 in the thrilling final on Sunday.
This victory marks China's 14th title in the biennial badminton mixed team world championship, which began in 1989 with Indonesia as the inaugural champion. In contrast, South Korea has won the title four times.
In the mixed doubles, the opening match of the best-of-five series, Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping from China faced off against Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung. They won the first game 21-16, but the South Korean duo bounced back to take the second set 21-17. Ultimately, Feng and Huang clinched the decisive game 21-15, as reported by Xinhua.
“Two years ago, our teammates Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong performed excellently in the final. We learned immensely from this year’s matches. I believe I executed my strategy perfectly, and Huang remains highly motivated,” Feng stated to Xinhua.
Huang reciprocated the praise, describing Feng as “perfect” and acknowledging his growth and ability to handle critical points effectively.
In the subsequent women’s singles match, Wang Zhiyi from China faced World No. 1 An Se-young and succumbed with scores of 21-17, 21-16.
“I felt a mix of nerves and excitement, being my first time in the Sudirman Cup final,” Wang expressed. “I tried to stick to our tactical plan, but I made several errors,” added the world No. 2 athlete.
Shi Yuqi from China secured a comfortable victory in the men’s singles against Jeon Hyeok-jin, winning 21-5, 21-5, thus giving China a 2-1 advantage.
“I sense my form improving with each match. Even though my opponent's ranking is lower, I recall facing challenges in the last Thomas Cup, so I gave it my all,” Shi remarked.
Finally, the Olympic women’s doubles silver medalists Tan Ning and Liu Shengshu sealed the championship for China by triumphing over world No. 3 Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee with scores of 21-14, 21-17.
