Tokyo, Sep 18 (NationPress) The intense rivalry between Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem is set to take the spotlight once more on Thursday at the javelin final of the World Athletics Championship. The Indian star, who has surpassed the 90-metre mark this season, aims to make history by defending his title on this grand platform.
Chopra showcased his prowess by qualifying effortlessly on Wednesday, requiring only a single throw of 84.85 metres to secure his spot in the final, well above the automatic qualification benchmark of 84.50, signaling his strong intent.
This marks the fifth consecutive occasion where Chopra has qualified for the finals with just one attempt. The previous four instances were during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, and the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
Following Chopra, Germany's Julian Weber cleared the automatic qualification mark in his second attempt, initially throwing 82.29m but later achieving a remarkable 87.21m, securing his place in the final directly.
Also joining in the final is his fellow countryman Sachin Yadav, who qualified after a nail-biting wait, along with long-time rival Arshad Nadeem, the reigning Olympic champion from Pakistan, who managed to qualify with a last-ditch effort.
Chopra, who earned a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, will defend the world title he claimed in Budapest in 2023. At 27, this star from Haryana made history two years ago by becoming India’s first-ever world champion in athletics with a throw of 88.17m. Nadeem had secured silver that day with a throw of 87.82m.
The rivalry further heated up in Paris last year when Nadeem dethroned Chopra as Olympic champion with an impressive throw of 92.97m, while the Indian settled for silver with a best effort of 89.45m.
The final field also includes numerous world-class competitors such as former world champion Anderson Peters, Germany’s Julian Weber, and veteran Julius Yego from Kenya. With the stakes elevated and the rivalry intensifying, all eyes will undoubtedly be focused on the Chopra–Nadeem contest — a clash that has come to symbolize South Asian athletics on the global stage.
