Mumbai, April 23 (NationPress) Arshad Nadeem, the current Olympic champion in javelin throw from Pakistan, has decided to reject an invitation to compete in the upcoming Neeraj Chopra Classic javelin throw meet set to take place in Bengaluru, as reported by Pakistani media outlets.
He has indicated that a scheduling conflict is the reason behind his decision not to attend the one-day event organized at the Sri Kanteerva Stadium on May 24.
"I have turned down the invitation since my schedule was established a year ago, and I am slated to be at an Asian meet in South Korea starting May 27," Arshad was quoted as stating by Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net). Currently, he is enjoying a break in his hometown, Mian Channu.
Arshad is expected to return to Pakistan shortly to prepare for the upcoming World Athletics Championship scheduled in Tokyo this September.
Earlier reports suggested that Arshad Nadeem was considering accepting the invitation upon its official arrival, but the Paris Olympic Games gold medalist opted to decline amidst rising political tensions between the two nations following a terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Another possible factor in Arshad Nadeem's decision not to participate in the NC Classic is the necessity of obtaining permission from the Pakistan government. He preferred to avoid any complications arising from the increasing tensions between the nations that could jeopardize his invitation from the Indian side.
Neeraj and Arshad have maintained a friendly relationship and camaraderie over the past five years while competing against each other. Neeraj secured a gold medal at the last World Athletics Championship held in Budapest, Hungary, while Arshad took home the silver.
During the Paris Olympic Games, Arshad Nadeem established an Olympic record to clinch the gold medal, while Neeraj earned the silver medal.
