Sydney, Jan 23 (NationPress) Following his recognition as the 64th member of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, former captain Michael Clarke has expressed his support for young Sam Konstas to keep his position as an opener in the forthcoming Test series in Sri Lanka.

With discussions around pairing Travis Head with Usman Khawaja as the opening duo, it could potentially lead to Konstas being left out for the first Test, which kicks off in Galle on January 29.

However, Clarke argues that Australia should maintain the batting lineup that recently earned them victories at the MCG and SCG against India. "I believe he (Konstas) would be eager to play. I don’t think we need significant alterations in our structure," he noted.

“We’ve just come off a victory. The conditions are quite different, yet Trav has performed remarkably in the middle order. Ultimately, it won’t matter much. If you’re set to open, you’ll face spin right away. If you bat fifth, you’ll still encounter spin,” Clarke added.

“Get accustomed to spin bowling since you’ll face it in both Test matches. Sam is an exceptional talent, and Australian cricket continues to nurture promising young athletes in both men’s and women’s cricket. Having experienced senior players around you is invaluable. Sam is fortunate to have these seniors providing guidance,” Clarke told reporters at the SCG.

Clarke, the last Australian captain to win a Test series in Sri Lanka, also emphasized the importance of having a fit Steve Smith, who is recovering well from a minor elbow injury incurred during the Big Bash League (BBL), as a significant advantage for the team.

“He plays a crucial role for us in those conditions due to his spin-playing abilities and tactical acumen. I expect Australia to field at least two spinners. I’d be surprised if Sri Lanka deploys more than two pacers,” he said.

“They might opt for just one. There are several youngsters within the Australian setup to familiarize themselves with Sri Lankan conditions, which differ greatly from anywhere else in the world,” he concluded.
