New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) The Mexican club Club León has been excluded from the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. This decision was reached by the FIFA appeal committee due to violations of the multi-club ownership regulations, with a replacement team to be announced shortly.

As a significant force in Mexican football, Club León triumphed over Los Angeles FC in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League final, winning the first leg 2-1 at home and securing the trophy for the first time with a 1-0 victory in California. This achievement qualified them for both the FIFA Club World Cup Saudi Arabia 2023, where they were defeated 1-0 by Urawa Red Diamonds in the second round, and the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

“Following disciplinary actions initiated against CF Pachuca and Club León, the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee opted to escalate the case directly to the FIFA Appeal Committee.

“Upon reviewing all evidence presented, the chairman of the FIFA Appeal Committee concluded that CF Pachuca and Club León did not adhere to the multi-club ownership criteria specified in article 10, paragraph 1 of the Regulations for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

“According to article 10, paragraph 4 of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Regulations™, FIFA has decided that Club León will be removed from the tournament, with news of a replacement team forthcoming,” stated FIFA.

Having won the Mexican league championship eight times, Club León has achieved back-to-back titles on two occasions (in 1947/48 and 1948/49, and again in 2013 and 2014). With a total of 18 domestic trophies, they rank as the fourth most successful club in the country, behind America, Guadalajara, and Cruz Azul. In addition to their eight league titles, they have claimed five Copa Mexico and five Campeon de Campeones trophies. Their victory in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League remains their only international accolade to date.
