Sydney, Jan 5 (NationPress) Australian captain Pat Cummins has acknowledged that it is improbable he will participate in his team's upcoming tour of Sri Lanka later this month, as he is expecting the birth of his second child with his wife, Becky.
Australia is set to visit Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series starting on January 29. This timing coincides with the anticipated delivery dates of Cummins' second child.
"Regarding the Sri Lanka tour, we’ll have to wait and see. Becky is currently holding on, so we’ll take it as it comes. However, it’s likely that I may find it difficult to travel there. Partners make significant sacrifices, so sharing moments like today with them is especially meaningful," Cummins conveyed to reporters following the Border Gavaskar Trophy victory on Sunday.
Should Cummins be unable to join the Sri Lanka tour, it may open the door for Steve Smith to lead Australia. Smith last captained the Test side in 2023 when Cummins returned home from India following the passing of his mother.
"We always discuss a succession plan. We have two vice-captains in the team; we had three players making their debuts this series. It’s a constant balancing act between the present and the future… these are discussions we routinely engage in," he continued.
"Once this Test match concludes, I’ll transition back to being a full-time dad and husband, and aim to excel at that role more than as a Test captain. I cherish it and feel incredibly fortunate," Cummins added.
The two-match series in Sri Lanka will serve as crucial preparation for Australia ahead of their World Test Championship Final against South Africa, having secured their consecutive appearance with a six-wicket victory over India in Sydney.
"We frequently discuss the World Test Championship; it’s a trophy we take great pride in holding, and we aim to defend it. This tournament is excellent as it requires consistent performance across various conditions and against different teams. It’s thrilling to be back, and I eagerly await the opportunity to travel there," Cummins concluded.
