Melbourne, Feb 27 (NationPress) Former Test cricketer David Boon has been selected to join the Cricket Australia (CA) Board. He takes over the position previously held by Paul Green, who resigned after six years representing Cricket Tasmania.

Boon, currently serving as an ICC Match Referee, is set to conclude his duties with the ICC following the ongoing Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai before officially joining the CA Board on March 28.

Regarded as one of the finest batters in Australia’s cricket history, Boon played 107 Tests, accumulating 7,422 runs at an impressive average of 43.65, including 21 centuries—the same number of Test hundreds as another Australian legend, Neil Harvey—and made 99 catches. He ranks as Australia’s fifth highest run scorer and fifth most capped player, being the second Australian after Allan Border to achieve the milestone of 100 Test matches between 1984/85 and 1995/96.

In addition to his Test career, Boon played in 181 One Day Internationals, where he scored 5,964 runs at an average of 37.04, including five centuries. He was part of the 1987 ICC World Cup-winning squad, where he earned the title of Man of the Match in the final by scoring 75 runs as Australia triumphed over England by seven runs.

Boon has served as a director for Cricket Tasmania since 2014, taking on the role of Chair in 2022. He has also acted as the general manager of Cricket Tasmania and was part of the Australian Selection Panel from 2000 to 2011. He became an ICC Match Referee in 2011, a position he will step down from.

Mike Baird, Chair of CA, expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m absolutely thrilled that David will lend his extensive experience as a player and cricket administrator to our Board.”

“David is an iconic figure in Australian cricket, widely respected for both his on-field achievements and his recent contributions to Tasmanian, Australian, and international cricket,” he added.

“His ongoing insights into international cricket as an ICC Match Referee will be crucial as we navigate the game’s rapidly evolving landscape,” he continued.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to Paul Green for his dedicated service as a CA Director over the past six years, including his essential role as Chair of our Audit and Risk Committee.”
