Ahmedabad, April 19 (NationPress) The captain of Delhi Capitals, Axar Patel, stated that their seven-wicket loss to Gujarat Titans on Saturday was due to his team being ‘10-15 runs short’ in their total, which ultimately made a significant impact on the match.
DC appeared to be on track at 173-4, and with only three overs remaining, the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium was hopeful of a strong finish. However, a late spell from Prasidh Krishna that resulted in the dismissals of both Axar and Vipraj Nigam in quick succession dealt a serious blow to the visitors, while effective death bowling from Ishant Sharma and Sai Kishore capped them at 203/8 in 20 overs.
Axar noted that the primary reason for Delhi's defeat was the frequent loss of wickets, but he expressed that it was not a troubling experience and they would not linger on the game.
"I feel we fell short by 10-15 runs, which made a difference. When we aimed to accelerate, we kept losing set batters, losing our rhythm, and couldn’t finish as we intended. Even with a few more hits in the last over, we might have limited them better," Axar Patel mentioned in the post-match discussion.
He added, "We bowled well, but a bit more precision in our catching and fielding would have been beneficial. We won't dwell on this loss; instead, we need to reflect on what we could improve and avoid repeating the same mistakes in future matches."
Gujarat’s captain Shubman Gill echoed similar thoughts, commending his bowlers for regaining control of the match, marking them as the first team in IPL history to chase down a total exceeding 200 against this opposition.
"At a certain point, it seemed like the score would reach 220-230. The way we managed to pull back, credit goes to the bowlers. Even in our first game, while chasing around 245, we were in the game and lost by just 10 runs. We have been successful in both chasing and defending. With Axar at the crease, it was tough to score off the fast bowlers, so we decided to stick with them," Gill stated.
