Did the Maharashtra Head Coach Anil Mann Believe They Were Close to Victory Against Delhi?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Noida, Feb 1 (NationPress) The Delhi Dangal Warriors secured their spot in the final of the Pro Wrestling League 2026, narrowly defeating the Maharashtra Kesari 5–4 in a thrilling Semi-final 2 at the Noida Indoor Stadium on Friday. The event was characterized by intense momentum swings and slim margins, with Delhi maintaining their composure to set up an exciting championship match against Haryana Thunders on Sunday.
Despite the loss, Maharashtra Kesari head coach Anil Mann expressed his pride in the team's performance, highlighting the tight nature of the contest and how little separated victory from defeat.
“It was a fiercely contested match, and the opposing team was exceptionally strong. In several bouts, we were on the brink of victory, but unfortunate circumstances turned those into losses in the dying seconds,” Mann shared with reporters during the post-match conference.
Mann emphasized the positive influence the league has had on emerging wrestlers, particularly those who get the chance to compete alongside elite athletes.
“This has been an excellent opportunity for junior wrestlers. They now have a platform to compete with Olympic and world champions, which has alleviated the fear and hesitation that often accompanies competing against seasoned athletes,” he stated.
He also commended the league’s innovative structure, noting that the introduction of the Power Minute has significantly increased the excitement and competitiveness of the matches.
“The Power Minute adds a thrilling element to the bouts. When an opponent has a substantial lead, it can be discouraging for the trailing player. However, the Power Minute gives them a chance and belief that they can turn the match around, even in the final moments,” he explained.
On the mat, Delhi initially took the lead through Anjli in the 62kg women’s bout, but Maharashtra quickly retaliated with victories from Manisha Bhanvala and captain Robert Baran, taking a 3–1 lead. Nishu Bhanvala’s narrow victory seemed to strengthen Maharashtra’s chances, putting Delhi on the edge of elimination.
However, Delhi executed a remarkable comeback led by Shubham Kaushik, whose impressive victory in the 57kg men’s category earned him the Player of the Match award. Anastasiya Alpyeeva and Vafaeipour Hadi Bakhtiar followed with essential wins, swinging the match back in Delhi’s favor, before Turan Bayramov sealed the win on criteria in a tense 74kg bout.
Although the final match was determined by forfeit, the outcome was already decided, with the Delhi Dangal Warriors securing a dramatic 5–4 victory. Manisha Bhanvala was awarded Fighter of the Match for her outstanding performance, even as Maharashtra fell just short of reaching the final.
