New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan believes that the Rohit Sharma-led team will feel the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the ICC Champions Trophy quite significantly.

Bumrah has been sidelined from the eight-team tournament due to a lower back injury, with Harshit Rana stepping in as his replacement in the Indian squad.

"It's wonderful to see the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy returning. I recall my first participation in 2013—it was a fantastic experience, and the excitement surrounding this tournament is palpable," Dhawan shared with the ICC.

"There’s a lot of speculation and predictions being made, which adds to the excitement, but I can't overlook India. I’m confident in their capabilities; they performed excellently against England in the recent ODI series.

"The concern remains that they will miss Jasprit Bumrah. His absence will be strongly felt, no question about it," he added.

The southpaw emphasized that Bumrah is a crucial player in significant ICC events due to his distinctive bowling style and precision.

"In my opinion, he is the best bowler globally, and his level of accuracy is nearly impossible to match. His calm demeanor is also vital in a major ICC event like this one."

Dhawan, however, expressed optimism regarding Harshit’s potential to shine in Dubai after his recent white-ball debuts against England, where he claimed nine wickets in four matches, including three ODIs.

"On the other hand, Harshit Rana has joined the squad and that is truly exciting—keep an eye on him, as he might just have a breakout tournament. I appreciate his attitude; he's ambitious and unafraid. He embraces challenges, and his form in the England series suggests he’s ready to capitalize on this opportunity, potentially adding a significant factor for India," the former batter stated.

The 39-year-old expressed satisfaction with the performance of Indian batsmen, including Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill.

"There are many reasons to be hopeful for India. They have a well-rounded side, especially in batting—there’s a promising mix of experience and youth. Shubman Gill is particularly consistent and has a crucial role to play. I anticipate he will have a fantastic tournament," Dhawan mentioned.

"Rohit Sharma has regained his form, and with Virat Kohli in the lineup, they are a formidable team that will be hard to stop.

"India performed admirably in the last Champions Trophy but unfortunately fell short in the final. However, they showcased incredible cricket, and there are fond memories from that experience; the squad knows what they are capable of," the former opener concluded.

India's tournament opener is scheduled against Bangladesh at Dubai International Stadium on February 20.
