IPL 2026: Naman Dhir Ready to Step Up Amid Rohit Sharma's Injury Concerns
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 15 (NationPress) With former captain Rohit Sharma uncertain for the upcoming match against Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Thursday, middle-order batter Naman Dhir is prepared to step up and bat higher in the order if requested by the team management.
Dhir, who usually serves as a finisher lower down the lineup, has previously moved up to bat on occasions during last season when the Mumbai Indians reached the playoffs, where they faced a defeat against Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2.
Following Rohit Sharma's right hamstring injury sustained during the match against the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the team management might consider promoting a player to open the innings and shifting Naman Dhir into the middle-order.
On Wednesday, Dhir expressed his readiness to bat in any position needed. "I am ready to bat in whatever position the team requires. I did it last year, where I batted at the 5th-6th position and can adapt again," said Naman Dhir during the pre-match press conference.
Dhir acknowledged that the team hasn't performed well in recent matches but remains optimistic that they can turn their fortunes around.
He stated that there is no concern regarding Rohit's fitness or the underwhelming performance of pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has not taken any wickets in four matches thus far.
"They possess a wealth of experience and are top-class players. We have no worries regarding Rohit or Jasprit bhai," he added.
When discussing MI's inefficiency with the ball during Power-plays, Dhir mentioned that bowlers like Trent Boult and Bumrah have the capability to secure wins for the team anytime.
"It's not that we have failed terribly with the bat in the Power-play. Yes, the inability to take wickets in the first six overs is a slight concern. However, with bowlers like Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah, they can turn things around and lead us to victory any day," he remarked.
