Mumbai, April 16 (NationPress) Star batsman Rohit Sharma is set to be sidelined for the upcoming matches as the Mumbai Indians strive to regain their momentum following three consecutive losses in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

It was confirmed on Thursday, prior to MI's clash with Punjab Kings, that Rohit is not at full fitness after injuring his right hamstring during the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12.

During the toss, captain Hardik Pandya stated that Rohit will be out for at least a couple of matches.

"Rohit is missing; he'll need a few games to assess his condition," Pandya mentioned, suggesting that Rohit’s recovery is not complete and MI will be cautious by not rushing him back into action.

Rohit sustained a right hamstring injury while playing against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12, retiring after scoring just 19 runs. He reportedly had scans done and participated in light training and batting drills the day before MI's match against Punjab Kings.

On Wednesday, the team announced that Rohit was still under the supervision of the medical staff and team management. He missed practice on Tuesday but briefly joined the pre-match training session, where he had his right leg bandaged and did some light sprints and batting practice.

On Thursday, the 38-year-old six-time IPL champion did not take part in the warm-up with his teammates and only appeared just before the toss, dressed in joggers, confirming his unavailability for the game.

His absence turned out to be advantageous as Quinton de Kock stepped up, making it to the playing XI and scoring a half-century, aiding the team in recovering from a shaky start against the Punjab Kings.

Point of View

The absence of Rohit Sharma due to injury poses significant challenges for the Mumbai Indians. His leadership and batting prowess are crucial for the team's performance, especially as they seek to recover from recent losses in the IPL.
