London, July 18 (NationPress) Wolves have revealed that Diogo Jota has been honored with a place in the club's Hall of Fame, recognizing not only his exceptional performance on the field but also the significant impact of his tragic passing on the world of football.
The Hall of Fame, independently governed by a committee led by Wolves legend John Richards, swiftly reached this heartfelt decision following the devastating loss of Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, as confirmed by the Premier League club.
Both Jota and his 25-year-old brother, Andre Silva - a fellow professional footballer - tragically lost their lives in a car accident on July 3 in Zamora, Spain.
Typically, inductions into this prestigious section of the club’s museum are the result of extended discussions. However, in this instance, the decision was unanimous, reflecting the deep emotions shared by fans and the broader football community, as well as the remarkable legacy left by Diogo, as stated by Wolves.
The Portuguese international joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in July 2017, netting 44 goals in 131 matches for the club. He played a vital role in securing the Championship title during the 2017-18 season, which led to their promotion to the Premier League.
“Given the overwhelming sadness surrounding this tragic event, we felt compelled to honor him as soon as possible,” remarked Wolves Hall of Fame chairman and club vice president John Richards.
“His impressive tally of 44 goals at Wolves, complemented by 65 at Liverpool as a Premier League title winner, truly speaks for itself. Fans across the globe, especially in Portugal after he assisted them in winning the Nations League this summer, are mourning his loss deeply. There was no reason to postpone this decision.
“We hope this tribute brings some comfort to those who were close to Diogo and Andre, and we believe that Wolves supporters will appreciate that this gesture is made with genuine love and admiration, and is entirely justified,” he added.
Wolves will honor the memories of Jota and Andre during two upcoming home matches - their last pre-season friendly against Celta Vigo on August 9, and their Premier League opener against Manchester City the following week.
