Athens, Nov 9 (NationPress) Novak Djokovic achieved his 101st career title in a thrilling encounter at the Hellenic Championship, overcoming Lorenzo Musetti in a captivating three-hour battle. The 38-year-old Serbian showcased his prowess with a gritty 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory in the final, which was marked by 13 break points and five breaks of serve in the final set alone.
Securing his 72nd tour-level title on hard courts, Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer for the most titles in the Open Era.
Both competitors pushed their limits throughout the match, particularly in the final set. For Musetti, it was a heartbreaking moment as he faced his sixth straight defeat in an ATP Tour final after winning his first two titles in 2022 in Hamburg and Naples, as reported by ATP.
"I dedicate this victory to the incredible people of Greece. Your support and passion for tennis have made me feel at home. This win is even more special with my family here. Immense gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this fantastic new tournament so memorable.
"To Musetti, what an epic battle we had. Congratulations on your remarkable performance and tournament. Keep pushing forward; your future is bright," Djokovic expressed in an Instagram post.
Musetti needed to win the title to leapfrog Felix Auger-Aliassime into the final qualification spot for the Nitto ATP Finals.
However, after Djokovic announced his withdrawal later on Saturday, Musetti will take his place and compete at the season finale for the first time.
"I was very eager to compete in Turin and give my best, but following today’s final in Athens, I regret to inform you that I must withdraw due to an ongoing injury. I am truly sorry to the fans who were hoping to see me play—your support means the world to me. I wish all players an amazing tournament, and I can't wait to return to the court with you all soon!" Djokovic stated in a press release.
