Dortmund, Jan 22 (NationPress) Borussia Dortmund has officially ended its relationship with head coach Nuri Sahin after a surprising 1-2 loss against Bologna on Tuesday. The Turkish manager was brought in after the team's setback in the 2024 UEFA Champions League final.
This loss to Bologna marked the German club's fourth consecutive defeat.
"Borussia Dortmund and Nuri Sahin are parting ways immediately. BVB has terminated its head coach's contract following the disappointing 1:2 loss in the UEFA Champions League at FC Bologna on Tuesday evening.
Dortmund will announce who will lead the team from the sidelines next Saturday for the Bundesliga match against SV Werder Bremen," stated the club.
Nuri Sahin made 274 competitive appearances for Borussia Dortmund, netting 26 goals. During his tenure at BVB, he clinched the Bundesliga title in 2011 and the DFB Cup in 2017. After managing Antalyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig from 2021 to 2023, he returned to BVB in January 2024 as an assistant coach before taking over from Edin Terzic.
According to a report from The Athletic, Dortmund's players were informed of this decision at their hotel in Italy on Tuesday night. Sahin and his staff left separately, and the team was scheduled to return to Germany on Wednesday. An emergency meeting was held on Wednesday morning to confirm the decision. No successor for Sahin has been determined yet.
After the defeat against Bologna, Sahin discussed the possibility of being removed from his position as head coach. "This is not about me. If I am the issue, and a coaching change would resolve all problems, so be it. We must perform, and the reality is that we have lost four matches in a row. Even securing a point would have been crucial for a top-eight finish. It is about Borussia Dortmund as a club, not about me," Sahin expressed during a press conference.
