Dortmund, Jan 30 (NationPress) Borussia Dortmund has officially named Niko Kovac as their new head coach, the Bundesliga club revealed on Wednesday. The 53-year-old succeeds Nuri Sahin, who was let go on January 22 after a series of unsatisfactory results in the Bundesliga and an early exit from the German Cup.
Kovac, who has previously managed Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg, has been without a job since departing from Wolfsburg in March 2024. His new challenge is to rejuvenate a faltering Dortmund team that currently occupies the 11th position in the Bundesliga standings with merely seven victories from 19 matches.
In his inaugural statement as Dortmund's head coach, Kovac conveyed his enthusiasm and resolve to improve the club's fortunes. "All those involved at BVB provided us with a very positive impression during discussions, so I am confident that we can achieve a lot together moving forward," Kovac stated.
He underscored the importance of unwavering determination, diligent effort, and passion to best represent Dortmund in the Bundesliga, Champions League, and the upcoming Club World Cup.
"The priority for all of us now is to exhibit unwavering determination, a huge heart, and the readiness to work diligently to represent Borussia Dortmund in the finest manner across all competitions. We are approaching this challenge with focus and commitment," he added.
Despite their struggles in the domestic league, Dortmund recently clinched a 3-1 triumph over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, securing their position in the playoff round. Nevertheless, the club's erratic performances under Sahin prompted the Dortmund management to pursue a more seasoned leader to stabilize the team.
Born in Berlin, Kovac played international football for Croatia and later transitioned into coaching. He managed the Croatian national team from 2013 to 2015, leading them to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
