Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dortmund, March 22 (NationPress) - In a significant development, German football club Borussia Dortmund and their sporting director Sebastian Kehl have reached a mutual agreement to terminate their partnership effective immediately, as confirmed by the Bundesliga club on Sunday.
This decision followed extensive discussions between the club’s management and Kehl.
Kehl joined Dortmund in 2018, taking on various roles, including head of the licensed players department for four years, during which he contributed to the club's victory in the DFB-Pokal in 2021. He was appointed sporting director in 2022.
Throughout his tenure, Borussia Dortmund consistently qualified for the UEFA Champions League and notably reached the final in 2024.
Lars Ricken, Dortmund’s managing director for sport, explained the rationale behind the decision, emphasizing that there were no conflicts, and both parties arrived at this conclusion together.
“Through an open discussion, Sebastian Kehl, Carsten Cramer, and I mutually acknowledged that this summer represents an appropriate moment for change. To facilitate preparation for both sides, we have agreed to terminate Sebastian’s role immediately. I have a long history with Sebastian—not only did we play together at Borussia Dortmund, but we also celebrated a German championship together in 2002. Sebastian has significantly contributed to our club, and we express our sincere gratitude for his dedication,” he stated in a club-released statement.
As a player, Kehl dedicated 13 years to Borussia Dortmund, securing three Bundesliga titles and achieving a domestic double in 2012.
In total, he participated in 748 matches for the club across various capacities.
Responding to the announcement, Kehl expressed his profound emotional connection to the club, acknowledging that it is indeed the right moment for both parties to part ways.
“Borussia Dortmund has been a significant part of my life for half my lifetime, and I maintain an incredibly strong bond with this wonderful club. However, we have mutually felt that it is time to move in different directions—for both BVB and myself. Lars, Carsten, and I arrived at this conclusion during a constructive discussion today. I owe a great deal to Borussia Dortmund and take pride in being part of the BVB family for nearly 24 years,” he remarked.
“During this time, I have experienced numerous remarkable successes with the club, its staff, and its amazing fans, and I will always be proud to be part of the club’s legacy. The foundation has been laid here—I wish the club all the best in its new direction and continued achievements. Borussia Dortmund, the incredible stadium, and the Südtribüne will always hold a special place in my heart. It has been an honor,” he concluded.
