Glasgow, Sep 7 (NationPress) Doug Watson has resigned from his position as Scotland men’s head coach, following a comprehensive review of recent performances and strategic planning regarding future fixtures and budget allocation, as stated by Cricket Scotland on Sunday.
Watson's departure comes after Scotland was unable to qualify for the T20 World Cup, having lost to Jersey and Italy in the qualifying tournament. He was originally appointed as interim head coach in March 2023, just before the ICC Men’s World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, where he achieved significant victories against three full member nations during that tournament.
Later, he led Scotland to triumph at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in July 2023 and was confirmed in the role permanently in early 2024. “While I’m saddened to be stepping down, I will carry with me many cherished memories from my time with the organization,” Watson remarked.
“It has been a privilege to collaborate with this squad and coaching staff, and I’m proud to depart with the team leading the ICC CWCL2 qualifying table. However, I am eager to spend more time with my family. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Cricket Scotland and will closely monitor their future developments. I wish everyone involved great success ahead,” he added.
During his tenure, Scotland demonstrated competitive spirit at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup held in the West Indies and USA, securing victories against Namibia and Oman in a challenging group that also included Australia and England. The team narrowly missed advancing to the Super Eight stage.
“We appreciate Doug’s dedication since joining Cricket Scotland in 2023 and the positive influence he has had on the team’s performance and culture. However, as we prepare for 2026 and the future, it became evident that a change was necessary. We sincerely thank Doug and wish him and his family all the best for what lies ahead,” stated Trudy Lindblade, Cricket Scotland’s Chief Executive.
The board has announced that a recruitment process to appoint a new men’s head coach will commence shortly, aiming for an appointment ahead of the ICC CWCL2 series in Namibia in March 2026.
“I’d like to express my gratitude to Doug for all his contributions to the team during his tenure. He is well-regarded by the players, has made a positive impact in several areas, and has experienced numerous memorable moments with the squad as head coach,” said Steve Snell, Cricket Scotland’s Head of Performance.
“With no fixtures scheduled until March 2026 and with Doug currently based overseas, it is the ideal moment to ensure that our coaching strategy aligns with the needs of the squad and the organization moving forward. We wish Doug all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions to Scottish cricket,” he concluded.
