North Zone staged a gripping late fightback on Day 3 of their Duleep Trophy quarterfinal at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, Bengaluru on Tuesday, claiming four wickets in the final 33 minutes to dramatically tilt the contest. West Zone, who had appeared well-placed for victory, now face the final morning needing 67 runs with only three wickets remaining.

How West Zone's Chase Unravelled

West Zone had looked comfortable midway through the third session, anchored by a 111-run partnership between Musheer Khan and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad, who had reached his fifty at better than a run-a-ball and appeared to be guiding his side home, was undone by a run-out attempting a quick single — the first run-out of his first-class career. The dismissal immediately changed the complexion of the match.

Within three overs, Musheer followed, falling just four runs short of a century. Attempting a one-handed sweep, he was caught off the toe-end as the ball kicked and turned sharply. His 96 had been a counter-attacking effort — nimble footwork against the spinners, aggressive leg-side play against the quicks — but the same sweep shot that had served him well ultimately ended his innings.

West Zone then lost two further wickets in quick succession as the momentum swung decisively. Urvil Patel remained unbeaten, with Shardul Thakur, Tanush Kotian, and Tushar Deshpande yet to bat or having contributed lower down.

Abid Mushtaq's Decisive Contribution

Abid Mushtaq, who had gone wicketless for much of the innings, proved the catalyst for the turnaround, extracting enough turn from the surface to dismiss Shams Mulani and Mukesh Choudhary in the closing stages. West Zone closed on 220/7, still 67 runs adrift of North Zone's combined total of 473.

North Zone's Second Innings Recovery

Earlier on Day 3, North Zone had resumed at 107/4 and eventually posted 222 in their second innings. Ayush Badoni contributed a crucial fifty, while Nishant Sindhu added 44 from the seventh position. At 158/7, the innings appeared to be running out of steam, but Anshul Kamboj struck three sixes to push the total past 200 and set up a competitive target. In the other quarterfinal, East Zone wrapped up a dominant innings and 210-run victory over North East Zone to advance to the semifinals. Resuming on 7/0 and facing an arrears of 349 runs, North East Zone were reduced to 90/8 by the 35th over before Pheiroijam Jotin offered late resistance, top-scoring with 39 off 75 balls from No.7. Akash Choudhary at No.10 faced 50 balls for his 27, extending the innings marginally before East Zone completed the win.

Anukul Roy finished with 5 for 37 — his seventh five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. East Zone's three left-arm spinners shared eight wickets in the innings. Shahbaz Ahmed dismissed opener Joseph Lalthankhuma, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi removed Kishan Lyngdoh and Imliwati Lemtur in the same over. Captain Ishan Kishan was equally busy behind the stumps, taking four catches and completing a stumping.
