IPL 2026: Shashank Singh Highlights PBKS Youngsters' Fearlessness and Confidence
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) Shashank Singh, a batter for Punjab Kings, highlights the fearlessness and confidence of the franchise's younger players as their standout qualities heading into IPL 2026. He notes that their ability to avoid overthinking distinguishes them from more seasoned players, including himself.
After a strong runners-up finish in 2025, the uncapped players of Punjab Kings have become an inspiring narrative. They collectively amassed 1,519 runs, the highest by uncapped players across any single team in IPL history. Left-handed opener Priyansh Arya made a significant impact, scoring 475 runs at an impressive strike rate of 179, and was one of only two uncapped players to score a century in the tournament.
“When we discuss our young talents, their greatest strength is their fearlessness. In Punjab, everyone embodies this quality – Priyansh Arya, Nehal Wadhera, Suryansh Shedge, Musheer Khan, and Harnoor Singh Pannu. The new crop of players is incredibly fearless. Unlike more seasoned players, they don’t dwell too much on their performances—something I recognize can be a challenge for us older players,” Shashank shared with IANS in the ‘JioStar Press Room’ ahead of IPL 2026.
Prabhsimran Singh also impressed with 549 runs at a strike rate of 160, while Nehal Wadhera completed a full IPL season with 369 runs over 15 matches. Following captain Shreyas Iyer, the next top run-scorers for PBKS were Arya, Prabhsimran, Wadhera, and Shashank himself.
The dynamic opening pair of Arya and Prabhsimran, who have also represented India ‘A’, accumulated 532 runs together during IPL 2025, and they are expected to deliver more big scores this season. However, as the new season approaches, a pressing question looms: will these youngsters replicate their impressive performances from last year? Shashank remains confident, suggesting that the fearless talents of PBKS will continue to evolve.
“For instance, during practice, if Priyansh or Suryansh face four deliveries without scoring, I might start second-guessing my technique. But these young players remain unbothered by such setbacks. They understand that confidence is crucial, especially at the IPL level. Their confidence and fearlessness are their strongest attributes,” he explained.
“Players like Priyansh and Suryansh possess extraordinary talent. Observing their daily performances, it’s clear they have immense potential. However, I believe a bit more maturity would benefit them, which will develop with experience. I consider myself a mature player, and I hope they mature quickly, which will be advantageous for them. The best part is their confidence and fearlessness—they truly embody a relaxed approach,” he elaborated.
Regarding their unfinished business from the previous season—falling just six runs short of claiming the IPL 2025 title—Shashank is resolute that they will seize the trophy this year. “I am confident that on May 31st, we will be celebrating at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. This isn't just a hunch; I truly believe it. It stems from our self-belief and collective belief as a team.
“Everyone is aligned and confident. Our focus is on taking it match by match because our ultimate goal is to secure the trophy. If we dwell on last year's final appearance, it could add unnecessary pressure. Thus, our immediate priority is to prepare for our opening match against GT, then against CSK and KKR.
“Winning the final is the ultimate aim. However, we must concentrate on every match, correct our mistakes, and that will make it easier. We are well-prepared and highly motivated as we continue with the same group of players,” he stated.
For Shashank personally, IPL 2026 is about bouncing back after a shoulder injury and finger fracture sidelined him for a significant part of the domestic cricket season with Chhattisgarh.
“During the IPL, it's more about mental resilience than sheer skill. Last year was challenging for me with a series of injuries preventing me from competing at a high level. My primary objective now is to make a significant impact for the team.
“Personal achievements are secondary, as my focus is on team success and obtaining a photo with the trophy. I prefer match situations over net practice, as my role demands strategic thinking and composure under pressure,” he concluded.
