New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed his heartfelt condolences on the untimely demise of Dominic Frimpong, a player for Berekum Chelsea FC, following a reported attack after a Ghana Premier League match against previous champions FC Samartex 1996.
The young talent, aged just 20, tragically lost his life when the team bus of Berekum Chelsea FC was ambushed while returning from a league match.
"I am profoundly saddened by the news of the tragic loss of Dominic Frimpong from Berekum Chelsea Football Club due to an attack on the team while returning from a Ghana Premier League match," Infantino stated in a message he shared on Instagram.
As the team was making their way back to Berekum from Samreboi, their bus was confronted by a group of armed assailants who obstructed the road.
According to the club's report, the masked attackers, armed with guns and assault rifles, ambushed the bus as the driver attempted to reverse. Players and staff sought refuge in nearby bushes. Sadly, Frimpong sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately succumbed while receiving treatment.
The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, also conveyed his sincere condolences regarding Frimpong's passing.
In a formal letter addressed to Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, the president of the Ghana Football Association, Motsepe expressed his deep sorrow over this tragic incident. "I was shocked to learn about the armed robbery that targeted the bus of Berekum Chelsea, which claimed the life of the 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong.
"Please extend my personal condolences and those of CAF to the family, friends, and teammates of Dominic Frimpong, as well as to the Ghana Football Association," he wrote.
The Football Association is in ongoing discussions with the club and relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Authorities are being urged to take decisive action to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
