Fit India Sundays on Cycle hits 15,000 locations in 82nd edition
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on 19 July 2025 inaugurated the 82nd edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, as the initiative simultaneously unfolded across more than 15,000 locations nationwide. The event, conducted in partnership with Ayushman Aarogya Mandir and National Health Mission personnel, has grown into one of India's largest weekly fitness mobilisations since its launch in December 2024.
Scale and Reach
The campaign has now drawn over 30 lakh participants cumulatively, with Fit India programmes collectively reported to have impacted more than 8 crore individuals since 2025. Sunday's edition was notable for the breadth of institutional participation — health workers from Ayushman Aarogya Mandir centres across every state joined the cycle ride, making this the most geographically distributed edition to date. In Delhi alone, 415 Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs have been inaugurated, according to Anshul Mudgal, State Program Officer for Ayushman Aarogya Mandir.
New Delhi Highlights
In the capital, Olympic hockey player and Asian Champions Trophy gold medallist Preety Dubey, Fit India ambassador Charul Malik, and yoga and wellness coach Anita Solanki from the Ministry of Ayush led a cycle ride around India Gate and Kartavya Path. Participants were encouraged to bring personal bicycles, supplemented by cycles provided by the Fit India programme. A dedicated Game Zone featuring life-sized Ludo and chess boards, carrom, table tennis, futsal, and badminton was set up to engage younger participants.
What the Minister Said
'Cycling is a small effort that yields immense results,' Mandaviya said at the event. 'By cycling for just one hour every Sunday, you can stay fit, contribute to reducing pollution, save the country's fuel resources, and maintain your own fitness.' He added that the initiative embodies the campaign's core message — 'fitness ki dose, aadha ghanta roz' (a dose of fitness, half an hour daily) — and credited it with inspiring lakhs of young people to take up cycling.
The Preventive Health Angle
The partnership with Ayushman Aarogya Mandir reflects a deliberate pivot toward preventive healthcare. Mudgal said the collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) aims to extend preventive health awareness to a wider population. 'Our goal is to ensure that people do not fall ill in the first place,' he said, describing the Fit India tie-up as aligned with the Mandir's core mandate. This is the first large-scale convergence of India's wellness infrastructure — health workers, sports bodies, and government ministries — under a single weekly fitness platform.
What Comes Next
With the event now in its 82nd consecutive week, organisers have signalled intent to deepen integration with the National Health Mission and expand the Game Zone model to more cities. As India's urban pollution and sedentary lifestyle concerns mount, the programme's dual focus on personal fitness and fuel conservation is likely to attract further policy support in the months ahead.
