London, April 22 (NationPress) Nottingham Forest has reclaimed third position in the Premier League following a hard-fought 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur.
Goals from Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood in the first half were sufficient to guide Nuno Espirito Santo’s team back to victory after suffering two prior defeats, despite the hosts controlling significant portions of the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Forest surged ahead with a 2-0 lead within the opening 20 minutes in North London. Anderson's deflected shot initiated the scoring, while Wood's 19th goal of the league season extended Forest's advantage in the 16th minute.
Spurs capitalized on their second-half pressure, with Richarlison reducing the deficit just three minutes from the end, but it was ultimately too late, according to Premier League reports.
The home team found it difficult to create further clear-cut opportunities as Nuno’s team sought to exploit Spurs on the counterattack during the closing moments, leading to Forest securing their points.
With this result, Forest leapfrogs Newcastle United, Manchester City, and Chelsea to strengthen their chances for UEFA Champions League qualification, while Ange Postecoglou’s squad sits at 16th.
“It’s disappointing. Another disappointing loss. A loss that for large parts was self-inflicted. We conceded two poor goals and gave ourselves a mountain to climb. I still think we didn’t deserve to lose on the balance of play,” remarked Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.
Forest's return to third place in the Premier League comes ahead of next weekend’s Emirates FA Cup semifinal against Manchester City.
“I think it was a significant improvement. We reacted well from the previous game. There was a clear intention to bounce back and the boys performed admirably,” stated Forest coach Nuno Espirito Santo.
“We have a clear game plan and are finding our identity. We controlled the match effectively in the first half. We scored goals, but Tottenham also created chances in the second half, and we had to hold on to our lead,” he added.
