Gavaskar Warns: 200 Runs May Not Be Enough Without Bumrah in Sydney Test

Sydney, Jan 4 (NationPress) With India enjoying a 145-run advantage over Australia at the close of Day 2 in the concluding Test match, significant uncertainty looms regarding whether India's captain and ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will be able to participate in what could be the final day's action of the fifth and ultimate Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Sydney Cricket Ground this Sunday.

Bumrah departed the ground accompanied by the team doctor and a security officer, as captured during the live broadcast. The pace leader delivered only one over post-lunch, showcasing a noticeable drop in speed before leaving the field following a brief conversation with Virat Kohli during the second session of Day Two. He was subsequently seen heading back to the dressing room after undergoing scans.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar expressed that Bumrah’s potential absence poses a serious dilemma for the team, which is currently holding just four wickets. He remarked that even a lead of 200 runs might not be secure if the 31-year-old fast bowler is unable to play on Day 3. “If India adds another 40 runs or sets a total of 185, they stand a great chance, but it hinges on Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness. If he is fit, then 145-150 runs could suffice. However, without him, even a score of around 200 might be inadequate,” Gavaskar stated on Star Sports.

In the post-day press briefing, Prasidh Krishna confirmed that Bumrah was sent for scans due to experiencing back spasms and noted that the medical staff is monitoring his condition, although no definitive information was provided on whether the leading wicket-taker of the series, boasting 32 scalps, would be able to bowl on the third day.

Gavaskar further asserted that India's approach to keep Bumrah's status confidential was a sound strategy. “I appreciated that when he returned after the scan, it took considerable time due to the distance to the hospital, but he appeared to be in good condition and his body language suggested that the Australian team remained unaware of his situation, which is crucial for maintaining the element of surprise,” he emphasized.

“From a tactical standpoint, it is essential not to disclose whether Bumrah will be bowling or not. Even if he is not available, if this information reaches the opposing team, it could alter their approach. Until now, Australian batsmen have struggled to find a solution against him; they are uncertain whether to attack, defend, or play from the front foot,” he added.

Bumrah has surpassed Bishen Singh Bedi’s record of 31 wickets to become India’s highest wicket-taker in a Test series played in Australia.
