Gavaskar Expresses Confusion Over Exclusion from Sydney Trophy Ceremony

Sydney, Jan 5 (NationPress) Renowned Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed his confusion regarding his exclusion from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series ceremony after the fifth Test concluded at the Sydney Cricket Ground with a six-wicket victory for Australia.
Gavaskar positioned himself at the edge of the boundary rope when Allan Border presented the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to captain Pat Cummins, marking Australia’s triumph in the series 3-1. It was revealed that Cricket Australia planned for Border to present the trophy if Australia emerged victorious, while Gavaskar would do so if India retained the trophy or if the Sydney Test ended in a draw.
“I was informed just before the series commenced that this would be the scenario. If India did not win or draw the series, my presence would not be needed. I am not feeling disheartened, just a bit confused. It’s the Border-Gavaskar Trophy; both of us should have been present,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by ABC Sport.
Australia clinched the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground in less than three days, reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since the 2014/15 series, where they secured a 2-0 win at home. This match also registered as the third-shortest result Test - the briefest since 1888 - with only 1141 balls bowled between the two sides.
India launched their trophy defense with a significant 295-run victory in Perth, but Australia retaliated in Adelaide, winning the pink-ball Test by ten wickets to level the series 1-1. The match in Brisbane ended in a draw due to rain.
Australia then triumphed in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne by 184 runs, taking a 2-1 lead, and confirmed their series win in Sydney’s Pink Test by six wickets. This result also paved the way for Australia to enter their second consecutive World Test Championship final, where they will clash with South Africa at Lord’s in June.
