Cricketing Extravaganza: Former Players Weigh In as Australia Clinches BGT Title

New Delhi, Jan 5 (NationPress) After Australia achieved a 3-1 win against India, reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in ten years, former cricketers expressed their thoughts on the series, emphasizing its high-quality cricketing display.

With a decisive 6-wicket win in the fifth and final Test, Australia also secured a spot in the Final at Lord's in June.

This victory elevated Australia to a 63.73 percentage of possible points, while India was restricted to 50.00 percent in their final Test of the cycle.

“It’s rare for iconic series to meet expectations; BGT consistently surpasses them. The significance of this trophy drives players to perform at their best. The outcome was indeed a cricketing spectacle of the highest order. Congratulations to Australia, the deserving winners,” tweeted former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer.

Notably, senior Indian players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja struggled to make an impact with the bat, while Jasprit Bumrah stood out as India’s key performer throughout the series.

Despite being named Player of the Series for his impressive tally of 32 wickets, Bumrah missed Australia’s second innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground due to a back spasm. Mohammed Siraj took the new ball alongside Prasidh Krishna, who took three wickets while defending a total of 161.

“Bumrah was exceptional at times, so it’s no wonder he earned the Player of the Series title,” posted Cricket Australia on X.

On the Australian side, Scott Boland received the Player of the Match award for his remarkable performance, finishing with a match total of 10-76, including a six-wicket haul in the second innings.

“It’s undeniable that senior batsmen have let down Team India, but the first-change bowler has been the main difference between the two sides,” said Irfan Pathan on X.

“We must acknowledge the immense effort put forth by @Jaspritbumrah93… he gave it everything,” Pathan added in another post.

“Australia outperformed us in every aspect. Congratulations,” he concluded.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan humorously congratulated Australia on their series victory. “Thank you to my Indian supporters who congratulated me on my prediction of a 3-1 win for Australia... especially those who were quite vocal after India took a 1-0 lead,” he tweeted.

“The scenes at the SCG were fantastic... An incredible series reaches its conclusion... The best team emerged victorious... The Australians knew how to seize critical moments... it’s been a pleasure to commentate on,” Vaughan added.

English umpire Richard Kettleborough described Australia’s triumph as the greatest comeback. “What we witnessed was the 'Greatest Comeback' by the Australian team after four consecutive BGT losses since 2015. Beau Webster finished off in style, and Australia claims the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade. This feels even more significant than the Ashes,” he remarked.

Under the leadership of Cummins, Australia will face Temba Bavuma’s South Africa in the WTC final on June 11 at Lord's, after the Proteas secured their final qualification spot with a nail-biting two-wicket victory over Pakistan in their Boxing Day Test.
