Gujarat Giants (GG) head coach Michael Klinger has explained that releasing England opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge ahead of the WPL 2027 auction was a calculated move to maximise overseas flexibility, with her England international commitments during the tournament window also factoring into the decision. The Giants announced their retention list ahead of the 28 October auction in Kochi, where they will enter with a purse of ₹1.25 crore.

Why Wyatt-Hodge Was Released

Klinger was candid about the difficulty of the call, acknowledging Wyatt-Hodge's quality while pointing to limited game time in the previous season and a scheduling conflict with England's international calendar. 'Danni is a world-class player. Unfortunately, she didn't get a lot of game time last year,' he said on the retention deadline show on Monday. 'We just felt that giving us another option as an overseas player in the auction and seeing what's out there and what other skill sets are out there, that's something that we can do in about a month.'

He added that Wyatt-Hodge's own preference leaned toward guaranteed playing time rather than the possibility of a bench role. 'Danni's also got some English series on during the WPL, and I suppose for her, her preference was to be playing cricket as well rather than potentially being part of our squad and maybe being on the bench. So, that's the way we decided to go,' Klinger said.

The Four Players Released and the Core Retained

Alongside Wyatt-Hodge, the Giants released India fast bowler Titas Sadhu, uncapped batter Aayushi Soni, and wicketkeeper-batter Shivani Singh. The franchise kept the bulk of its squad intact, retaining overseas stars Beth Mooney, skipper Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham, Kim Garth, and Sophie Devine.

On the Indian contingent, the retained group includes Yastika Bhatia — returning after missing WPL 2026 due to a knee injury — Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Renuka Singh Thakur, Tanuja Kanwer, Kashvee Gautam, Kanika Ahuja, Bharti Fulmali, Anushka Sharma, Jintimani Kalita, and Happy Kumari.

The Reasoning Behind Domestic Releases

Klinger explained that Yastika's return effectively made Shivani redundant as a second wicketkeeping option, given that Mooney also keeps wicket. 'Probably releasing her was sort of a reflection on Yastika Bhatia being available for us this year. So we've got two keepers already now with her and Beth,' he said.

On Titas Sadhu, Klinger cited a prolonged injury run. 'She's just had a lot of injuries last year's WPL and couldn't play much for us and has been sort of injured since. I know she's coming back now. So looking forward to see how she goes over the next few weeks,' he added, leaving the door open for the seamer's return to form.

Klinger's Goal: Finish on Top, Reach the Final

Having suffered Eliminator exits in each of the last two WPL editions, Klinger outlined a clear strategic priority — securing a top-of-table finish to earn a direct path to the final. 'The last two years we've made playoffs and unfortunately lost in the eliminator. So one way of making sure we make finals is to finish on top. So that's certainly going to be a goal of ours initially,' he said.

He expressed confidence in the squad's readiness, pointing to the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) as preparation for the overseas contingent. 'Our overseas players will all be playing in the WBBL, sort of leading into that as well. So it'll be really good for them to have some high-quality cricket coming into the WBBL,' Klinger concluded. The Giants head into the 28 October auction in Kochi with a settled core and a clear mandate.
