New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) Gurugram's Tapendra Ghai delivered an exceptional round with a score of eight-under 62, establishing a commanding four-shot lead in the third round of the Rs 1 crore Calance Open, held at the Qutab Golf Course.
The 29-year-old Ghai (64-67-62), who claimed his sole title on the PGTI in 2018, raised his total to 17-under 193 after this impressive penultimate round, advancing three positions from his previous tied fourth place.
Honey Baisoya from Delhi (67), Pukhraj Singh Gill from Ludhiana (68), and Yuvraj Sandhu from Chandigarh (69) are now tied for second place, each with a total of 13-under 197.
Ghai, who initially led the tournament but fell behind in the second round, showcased remarkable putting skills on a day when many struggled with short putts. He made single putts on his first eight holes, achieving three birdies and executing several impressive par saves.
Following the turn, he maintained his momentum, securing three more birdies between the 10th and 13th holes, including his longest putt of the week, a 30-footer on the 13th hole.
Despite a bogey on the 14th that was unexpected, he quickly redeemed himself with birdies on the final three holes, demonstrating quality putting and adept bunker play.
"I started strong with single putts on the first eight holes, and I managed to finish strongly with birdies on the last three holes. That always provides momentum heading into the next round. The main difference from round one was my improved putting today. Crucially, I’ve been able to implement my practice this week," Ghai remarked.
"In the final round, it will be essential to remain focused and execute effectively. I have experience with the Qutab Golf Course, having played here for three years as a junior. However, I must note that the course has changed significantly since then," Ghai added.
Honey Baisoya secured six birdies and a bogey during his 65, moving up four spots to tie for second. Pukhraj Singh Gill shot a 66, advancing two spots, while Yuvraj Sandhu improved his rank with a 67.
Aryaman Aditya Mohan from Mumbai and Manu Gandas from Gurugram also made significant gains, both firing impressive rounds of 63. Aryaman concluded the day tied for sixth at 11-under 199, while Manu finished the day in ninth place at 10-under 200.
