Ahmedabad, March 29 (NationPress) Prasidh Krishna demonstrated remarkable skill in taking wickets using slower deliveries, while Mohammed Siraj excelled with his scrambled seam bowling as Gujarat Titans registered an impressive 36-run victory against Mumbai Indians in the ninth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.
Following a strong performance from opener B Sai Sudharsan, who scored 63 and aided GT in reaching 196/8, the bowlers executed their plans effectively, restricting MI to 160/6 on a challenging pitch. Krishna recorded figures of 2-18, while Siraj contributed with 2-34, and both Kagiso Rabada and R Sai Kishore took one wicket each. The impressive bowling display meant that Rashid Khan bowled only two overs.
For MI, aside from Suryakumar Yadav, no other batsman found their rhythm, with shot execution being a significant issue. Chasing a target of 197, Rohit Sharma started by hitting Siraj for two boundaries, but Siraj quickly retaliated with a delivery that knocked over Rohit’s off-stump for just eight runs.
While Tilak Varma managed to hit Rabada for three boundaries, Siraj struck again, dismissing Ryan Rickleton with another scrambled seam that uprooted the off-stump, leaving him at six. Suryakumar showcased his trademark flick for six off Siraj, while Tilak overturned an lbw decision on review, concluding the power-play at 48/2.
As Tilak and Suryakumar both scored off Ishant Sharma, the latter swept Kishore for four, but it resulted in Sudharsan leaving the field after injuring his left hamstring. With the required run rate exceeding 11, a struggling Tilak attempted to loft Krishna, only to be caught at long-on for 39.
Robin Minz had little impact as he was dismissed, and Suryakumar, after being struck on the helmet by a short ball from Krishna, could not last until the end, getting caught at long-off due to another slower delivery.
Despite Hardik Pandya’s disappointing innings of 11 runs off 17 balls coming to an end at the hands of Rabada, the late contributions from Naman Dhir and Mitchell Santner were insufficient, leaving MI winless against GT for the fourth consecutive time in Ahmedabad.
Sudharsan was key in keeping MI at bay with his 41-ball innings that included four fours and two sixes. He received solid support from Jos Buttler and captain Shubman Gill, who scored 39 and 38 respectively. For MI, Pandya was the standout bowler with 2-29, but their fielding and catching left much to be desired.
Inserted into bat first, Gill started aggressively, striking Trent Boult for a boundary over backward point and then pulling Deepak Chahar for another. Sudharsan followed suit with a stunning on-drive off Boult and another flick for four.
The introduction of Mujeeb Ur Rahman did not ease MI’s troubles as Sudharsan hit him for four and six, while Gill also found boundaries, concluding the power-play with the hosts amassing 66 runs.
MI managed to restrict the duo momentarily, leading to Gill’s dismissal when he pulled a short ball from Pandya to deep square leg. Buttler then got into the groove, hitting Santner for six and four, followed by another boundary off Pandya, as their partnership grew.
Mujeeb broke the 51-run partnership by dismissing Buttler, who was caught behind for 39, followed by Shahrukh Khan getting caught off Pandya. Sudharsan reached his fifty in just 33 balls, and he and Sherfane Rutherford both hit sixes off Satyanarayana Raju.
Rutherford also cleared the boundary against Boult before Sudharsan was trapped lbw for 63 by a yorker. MI's woes continued as they lost two more wickets, including Rahul Tewatia for a diamond duck.
Even with a slow-over rate penalty leading to four MI fielders outside the circle, Raju dismissed Rashid Khan in the final over, and R Sai Kishore was run out, leaving the hosts at 196/8, which was enough to secure their first points of the season.
Final Scores:
Gujarat Titans: 196/8 in 20 overs (B. Sai Sudharsan 63, Jos Buttler 39; Hardik Pandya 2-29) defeated Mumbai Indians: 160/6 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 48, Tilak Varma 39; Prasidh Krishna 2-18, Mohammed Siraj 2-34) by 36 runs.
