Liverpool, April 20 (NationPress) Pep Guardiola hailed Manchester City’s 2-0 victory in the Premier League against Everton during their final appearance at Goodison Park as ‘a significant win’ in the pursuit of Champions League qualification.

City concluded their visit to Goodison Park with a crucial three points. Late second-half goals from Nico O’Reilly and Mateo Kovacic propelled the Blues forward in their Champions League ambitions.

Matheus Nunes set up O’Reilly, who skillfully netted the opener, while Kovacic secured the win with a strike in stoppage time, ensuring the Toffees faced defeat.

This win marked City’s eighth consecutive triumph in the top-flight at Goodison Park, elevating Guardiola's team from fifth to fourth place.

The top five teams at the season's end qualify for the UCL, with City aiming for a 15th consecutive campaign in this prestigious European tournament.

“I would characterize it as a significant win. We had to demonstrate intelligence. With just five or six matches remaining, securing a victory here at Goodison Park, particularly given their current form, is crucial,” Guardiola stated on the Manchester City website.

“This is tremendously important. I am immensely thankful for what these players have achieved over the past decade, especially this season amid a challenging period with injuries. Fortunately, we are now relatively stable,” he added.

“We have a significant match on Tuesday [against Aston Villa] followed by two more fixtures both at home and away. We hope to achieve our goal of qualifying for the Champions League,” Guardiola continued.

City has five remaining Premier League matches: home fixtures against Aston Villa, Wolves, and Bournemouth, alongside away games against Southampton and Fulham.

The City manager also expressed admiration for the contributions of young player O’Reilly. “He’s an attacking midfielder, and playing as a left-back allows him to make those attacking runs. He consistently gets into those positions. Look at his performances against Plymouth and Bournemouth. When you play full-back, scoring is possible, similar to Josko before him,” he remarked.

“We are incredibly thankful for his efforts, as he’s not a conventional left-back. They possess many tall and strong players. When the delivery is right and you have height, you can create chances. They hit the post, and then Stefan made a crucial save. They had a strong ten minutes in the second half, but we worked diligently to find the goal.”
