Karnataka Agriculture Minister prays for rains at Igguthappa Temple in Madikeri
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Karnataka Agriculture Minister P.M. Narendra Swamy, acting on the directions of Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, offered special prayers at the revered Sri Padi Igguthappa Temple in Kakkabe, Virajpet, on Sunday, 23 August, seeking abundant rainfall across the state. The district administration organised a Rudrabhisheka ceremony at the temple, underscoring the government's concern over the current rainfall deficit.
What the Minister Said
Speaking to reporters after the prayers, Narendra Swamy stressed the critical link between adequate rainfall and the state's water and agricultural security. 'If there is good rainfall in the land of Mother Cauvery and Sri Igguthappa, the reservoirs across the state will be filled, ensuring a good crop as well as adequate drinking water,' he said. 'I have prayed for abundant rainfall in the Cauvery and Igguthappa regions in the coming days.'
The minister noted that the current rainfall shortage had created multiple problems, making the prayer ceremony a necessary step by the state government.
Cauvery Water Dispute Angle
Narendra Swamy also connected adequate rainfall in the Cauvery basin to the longstanding inter-state water dispute, suggesting that normal rainfall could ease tensions significantly. 'If the Cauvery basin receives average rainfall, inter-state water disputes can be resolved. Nearly 90 per cent of the problems can be addressed,' he said, adding that the state government had taken positive steps after building confidence among all stakeholders.
The Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has been a persistent flashpoint, with reservoir levels directly influencing the quantum of water releases mandated by the Supreme Court.
Human-Wildlife Conflict in Madikeri
Responding to questions from reporters, the minister also addressed the rising incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the Madikeri region. He said the government was taking necessary steps to permanently resolve the problem of wild elephant menace in forest-fringe areas. He urged tourists, workers, and others visiting such areas to exercise caution and remain alert in the meantime.
Officials Present
The ceremony was attended by prominent officials and elected representatives, including Virajpet MLA and Chief Minister's Political Secretary A.S. Ponnanna, Madikeri MLA Dr Mantar Gowda, Deputy Commissioner S.J. Somashekar, Zilla Panchayat CEO Anand Prakash Meena, and Superintendent of Police R.N. Bindumani. The high-level turnout reflects the state government's emphasis on the gravity of the rainfall situation.
With Karnataka's reservoirs under pressure and the Cauvery dispute simmering, the coming weeks of the monsoon season will be closely watched by both farmers and policymakers across the state.
