New Delhi, Oct 5 (NationPress) Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has called upon everyone to lend their support to those who have been severely impacted by recent floods and natural disasters across the nation. He highlighted the dire situation in his home state, Punjab, while also discussing his significant contributions as a Member of Parliament.
The 45-year-old Rajya Sabha member emphasized the necessity of being in touch with the public and addressing pertinent issues with the government.
In an interview with IANS, Harbhajan expressed his commitment to the flood-stricken communities in Punjab, stating that he will continue to exert all efforts to assist the citizens facing hardships.
“There are several important matters I feel should be addressed, whether they pertain to sports or other areas. I strive to voice these concerns to the government, but opportunities are limited—time is of the essence. We submit these issues regularly, but speaking in the House can be challenging. Following the floods in Punjab, I was present on-site with the affected communities. Their safety and well-being are my top priorities; I feel fulfilled when I know they have access to necessary resources,” he explained.
“I have done everything within my power, from rescuing individuals to organizing food and fuel—whatever aid we could provide, we did. I will be returning to Punjab and will continue to do all I can for the people,” Harbhajan affirmed.
He also noted that 16 villages in his state were hit hard by the floods, and he and his companions are committed to sponsoring the education of children from these areas.
He acknowledged that farmers have suffered significant losses due to crop damage, which is why he and his friends have chosen to offer financial support to ensure the education of their children remains uninterrupted for a year. He further stated that he will continue assisting them financially if the farmers cannot resume their agricultural activities.
“Sixteen villages were affected by the floods, with water levels rising dramatically. I worry about the children there as their education is at stake. Farmers typically pay school fees after selling their crops, but with no crops available and their land damaged, they face financial hardships. They will likely need to take out loans to replant,” he elaborated.
“I requested a list of children from those 16 villages, and my friends and I have committed to covering their educational expenses for one year. If, after that year, the farmers are still unable to return to farming, we will extend our support since these children are the future of our nation. If we have the means, we should use them to assist those in need. Fame and recognition lose their value if you cannot help others,” he emphasized.
“I want to ensure that the education of these children remains intact. I encourage people to consider donating a portion of their earnings to organizations that aid communities affected by disasters and to stand in solidarity during their time of need,” he added.
