Hockey India on Wednesday, 29 July announced a 20-member Indian men's hockey squad for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with star defender Harmanpreet Singh named captain as the defending champions target back-to-back gold at the continental showpiece running from 19 September to 4 October. The stakes are unusually high this edition — the tournament winner earns direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Squad Composition

Veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh, India's most-capped player, returns to provide experience alongside emerging talent, reflecting chief coach Craig Fulton's strategy of blending proven internationals with fresh faces. Goalkeeping duties will be split between Mohith HS and Suraj Karkera.

The defensive unit includes Jarmanpreet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Jugraj Singh, Sanjay, Sumit, and Yashdeep Siwach. The midfield is anchored by Rajinder Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Nilakanta Sharma, and Vivek Sagar Prasad. The forward line comprises Dilpreet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Sukhjeet Singh, Mandeep Singh, and Abhishek.

Pool A Draw and Match Schedule

India have been placed in Pool A alongside hosts Japan, Korea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. All matches will be held at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara. Twelve teams, divided into two pools of six, will contest the title.

India open their campaign against Indonesia on 20 September, followed by fixtures against Sri Lanka (22 September), Korea (24 September), hosts Japan (26 September), and Bangladesh (28 September).

Chief coach Craig Fulton underscored the dual significance of the tournament, stating: 'The Indian squad selected for the Asian Games is very experienced. We look forward to the challenge of playing in Japan where the winner qualifies for the LA 2028 Olympics and that is the ultimate goal for us as a team and as a nation.'

Captain Harmanpreet called for composure and freedom of expression from his players: 'Be it the youngsters or the senior players, I have complete faith in all the players to make good use of the opportunities they get. The main target is to not take pressure, enjoy the game and understand your responsibilities.'

The Defending Champions' Context

India claimed gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023 under Harmanpreet's captaincy, ending a long wait for continental supremacy. Retaining that title on Japanese soil would not only affirm India's standing as the dominant force in Asian hockey but also hand the squad a direct Olympic berth — removing the need to navigate the qualification circuit ahead of LA 2028. Notably, this is the second consecutive Asian Games at which Harmanpreet will lead the side, underscoring Hockey India's faith in his leadership.

With the Olympic qualification prize on the line, India's pool-stage encounters against Korea and hosts Japan are widely expected to be the sternest tests before the knockout rounds.
