New Delhi, April 28 (NationPress) As the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) prepare for their upcoming match against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, fast-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana expressed his nostalgia for the excitement and presence that Gautam Gambhir brought to the team last season.
KKR clinched the IPL 2024 title with Gambhir, their former two-time champion captain, serving as a mentor. However, in July, Gambhir departed to take on the role of India's head coach, and Dwayne Bravo assumed the mentoring position for KKR.
Currently, KKR sits at seventh place in the points table with three wins, five losses, and one abandoned game. The franchise also recently reinstated Abhishek Nayar, who had previously stepped down as India's assistant coach. "The support staff is largely unchanged, and with Nayar bhai's return, there is indeed a thrill element that I personally miss due to Gambhir’s absence. But that's just my view," said Rana.
"I wasn't referring to anything personal. It's well-known that Gambhir has a unique aura that motivates the team. I was commenting on that. Everything else remains the same with Chandu (Chandrakant Pandit, head coach), Nayar bhai, and Bravo. The environment we have is positive," he added.
Rana noted that changes have occurred since Nayar returned, attributing it to his astute understanding of the game and his familiarity with the Indian core of the team, which he has helped develop over many years. "Having him back is beneficial and uplifting," Rana remarked during the pre-match press conference on Monday.
Born and raised in New Delhi, Rana is currently KKR's joint-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2025 with 11 wickets across nine matches. Yet, he acknowledged his dissatisfaction with his performance thus far and is determined to improve in the remaining fixtures. "I’m not completely satisfied with how I’ve played. My goal is to perform better in the next five matches. Wickets from reverse swing are vital now that saliva is permitted, especially in death bowling," he stated.
Rana concluded by expressing hope that the KKR bowling lineup quickly adapts to the slow and gripping conditions at the stadium. "The expectations are similar to those at Kotla, where the bounce typically is low. For instance, RCB bowlers effectively utilized slower balls which gripped well. The sooner we can read the pitch, the better it will be for us," he said.
