Harshit Rana on 5-month injury return: 'Finally feels like I'm back'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India pacer Harshit Rana has opened up about his emotional return to the national squad after a gruelling five-month absence due to a knee injury, describing it as the most challenging period of his career. The 24-year-old rejoined the Indian setup ahead of the third ODI against Afghanistan following the completion of his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE).
Missing the World Cup — the hardest blow
For Rana, the injury carried a particularly painful sting: it forced him to watch India's T20 World Cup triumph from the sidelines after he was sidelined during a warm-up match. The pacer had nurtured dreams of playing in a World Cup since childhood, making the absence all the more difficult to accept.
'For me, especially, it was very difficult. Because as a kid, my dream was to play in the World Cup. And India had won, so I missed out on that. But I had five months. I mean, I've been away for five months. But I've worked a lot on everything,' Rana said in a BCCI video.
The role of BCCI's Centre of Excellence
Rana spent roughly three to three-and-a-half months at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, crediting the facility's resources — including quality coaches, trainers, and physiotherapists — for accelerating his recovery.
'I feel like CoE is a place where you have everything. If a player needs anything to improve, you have everything there. Good coaches, good trainers and top physios. It helped me immensely,' he said.
The mental battle of a long absence
Beyond the physical rehabilitation, Rana acknowledged that the psychological toll of being away from competitive cricket proved even harder to manage. Having never previously endured such a prolonged spell on the sidelines, he described his return to the dressing room as deeply satisfying.
'Mentally, I'm very happy because I wasn't used to staying away from the cricket field for a long time. I had never been away for five months. So it was a very difficult time for me. But now it finally feels like I'm back,' Rana stated.
Back in the thick of it
Rana said reintegrating into India's training environment has reinforced just how unique the experience of representing the country is. He singled out the intensity of Indian cricket's practice sessions as something that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
'The intensity that you get during Indian cricket practice is unmatched. No matter how much you train, the intensity and atmosphere here is very different. So it's a lot of fun being a part of it,' he added.
This comes amid India's ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan, which provides Rana a timely platform to reassert himself in a competitive national setup. With his rehabilitation behind him, the focus now shifts firmly to performance.
