Helmet Man Raghavendra Kumar Advocates Road Safety via IPL
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 5 (NationPress) Raghavendra Kumar, affectionately referred to as the Helmet Man of India, has called on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to harness the extensive influence of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to drive road safety awareness throughout the nation. He emphasized that cricket is the most effective medium to shape public behavior.
Kumar, who served as the chief guest at a six-over tennis ball tournament hosted by Victorious Endeavours at the DDA Siri Fort Complex on Sunday, pointed out how the sport can motivate millions to embrace safer road practices.
"Cricket is undeniably the most beloved sport in India. Fans are captivated watching their favorite players score boundaries and sixes, yet they often overlook that cricketers bravely face fast bowlers only because they wear helmets. This sends a powerful message about road safety," Kumar shared with IANS.
He further stressed that embedding road safety initiatives within the IPL could lead to significant change. "The IPL is a colossal event, and the BCCI wields considerable influence. Our nation's economy will strengthen when citizens adhere to road safety regulations. The death of a single individual incurs a loss of almost Rs 92 lakh to the country, and overall, India suffers a loss exceeding Rs 5 lakh crore due to road accidents. Thus, promoting road safety through sports like IPL would be a monumental victory for India," he stated.
Kumar raised alarms regarding the rising usage of counterfeit helmets, which he argues is a significant factor in road accident fatalities. He believes cricket can play a pivotal role in addressing this problem.
"If we can disseminate this message through cricket, we can eradicate counterfeit helmets from our nation. Sports serve as a platform to reach millions. We can not only advocate for road safety but also enlighten people about the hazards of using fake helmets,” he asserted.
Cricket in India has historically transcended mere entertainment, often acting as a conduit for social messaging. Initiatives like the Road Safety World Series exemplify this role, uniting former international stars to champion responsible road behavior.
Supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and endorsed by the BCCI, the tournament has seen legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara participate, amplifying the message among fans. Since its launch in 2021, the series has evolved into a vital platform merging cricket with public education.
