Hyderabad, June 5 (NationPress) A potential stampede was successfully avoided during the enthusiastic celebrations in Hyderabad late Tuesday night, following the Royal Challengers Bangalore's triumph in the Indian Premier League, as reported by city police on Wednesday.
An immense crowd emerged on the streets late that night, resulting in significant traffic congestion.
In light of the tragic stampede during RCB’s celebrations in Bangalore, which resulted in 11 fatalities and numerous injuries, videos from the festivities in Hyderabad circulated widely on social media.
Authorities reported that over 20,000 individuals congregated from Secretariat Road to IMAX circle, causing a massive traffic standstill. Emergency vehicles were trapped, causing inconvenience to the public. However, police acted promptly and decisively to prevent a potential stampede, thereby protecting many lives.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner C. V. Anand expressed his concerns on X regarding the sudden influx of fans onto the streets for the celebrations.
"Observing the stampede in Bangalore left me questioning our priorities! This is not a national team clinching the World Cup! It’s merely a franchise named RCB, which operates commercially and doesn’t even include a single player from Hyderabad! It’s not even a team based in Hyderabad," remarked the Commissioner, a former cricketer.
"Officers on night duty were completely taken aback at midnight as waves of young fans and celebrators flooded Tank Bund, NTR Marg, and Necklace Road, displaying unruly behavior, as seen in the alarming videos below. Traffic became congested in all directions. Observing the chaos and hooliganism, additional forces were deployed, and a lathi charge was executed to disperse the unruly crowd," Anand shared, posting several videos of the revelries.
“From a law enforcement standpoint, these spontaneous celebrations by large gatherings pose a serious risk to public safety and could lead to incidents similar to what occurred in Bengaluru. What if fatalities had occurred in Hyderabad too? Is it reasonable to expect such celebrations for RCB in Hyderabad? With social media influencing events nationwide and globally, police must remain vigilant for all possible scenarios in the future! Is it even humanly feasible to manage this?"
