New Delhi, June 4 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has vehemently condemned the inadequate planning and crowd control during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL victory celebrations at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a stampede tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 11 fans and injuries to many others.
Following RCB's long-anticipated first IPL championship win on June 3 in Ahmedabad, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) organized a celebratory event in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Thousands of enthusiastic fans flocked to the Chinnaswamy Stadium, eager to see their sporting idols.
However, as the crowd grew, the situation spiraled out of control. The police had to resort to a lathi-charge to manage the crowd, leading to chaos and panic. The stampede resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, while numerous others were taken to Bowring Hospital and Vydehi Superspeciality Hospital for medical attention.
"People won’t forget this — or Virat Kohli. While lives were lost outside, celebrations continued inside. It’s incredibly shocking and disheartening. The families of the victims should consider filing a lawsuit against RCB and the state government for ₹100 crore due to this devastating incident... The BCCI is also evading accountability," stated former cricketer Madan Lal in an interview with IANS.
Earlier that day, Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a press conference post-incident, announcing compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar defended the event's arrangements, asserting, “We had deployed 5,000 police personnel. We couldn’t use force on such a vibrant, young crowd.”
Authorities have confirmed that two bodies are at Bowring Hospital while four others are at Vydehi Hospital. Six individuals are currently receiving treatment in the ICU at Vydehi Hospital, with three others also admitted to ICU.
The Karnataka government had previously canceled the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, citing security concerns.
