Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, 27 August chaired a high-level review meeting in Ahmedabad covering India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics, preparations for the 2029 World Police and Fire Games, and the 2030 Commonwealth Games — signalling the Centre's intent to position Ahmedabad as a global sporting hub within the decade.

The meeting was attended by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, along with senior officials. Shah said the government is 'firmly committed to establishing India as a global sporting destination by hosting international sporting events,' according to a post he shared on social media platform X following the meeting.

The review assessed infrastructure readiness, venue development, and timelines for all three events — each of which is either confirmed or being actively pursued for Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad's Confirmed and Proposed Hosting Rights

Ahmedabad is already confirmed as host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the centenary edition of the Games. Commonwealth Sport formally ratified the city — referred to as 'Amdavad' by the organisation — at its General Assembly in Glasgow in November 2025. The 2030 edition marks exactly 100 years since the inaugural Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.

For the 2029 World Police and Fire Games, India was designated the host country in June 2024, with Ahmedabad selected as the venue. Shah had at the time described the selection as recognition of India's expanding sports infrastructure.

On the Olympic front, Ahmedabad has been put forward as India's proposed host city for the 2036 Summer Olympics. Preparations are focused on developing facilities that meet international Olympic standards — with the stated aim of leveraging the same infrastructure for athlete training and development beyond the Games.

Venue Inspections and International Engagement

A Commonwealth Sport delegation visited Ahmedabad and New Delhi in April, inspecting key venues including the Narendra Modi Stadium, Mahatma Mandir, and Veer Savarkar Sports Complex. Discussions were held with both Gujarat state and central government officials on the operational and logistical requirements for delivering the 2030 Games.

Glasgow 2026 Handover and India's Medal Tally

The latest review follows the conclusion of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where India finished joint fourth alongside Scotland with 29 medals, including 13 golds. Glasgow has since formally handed over the Commonwealth Games baton to Ahmedabad for the centenary edition. The handover adds both symbolic weight and logistical urgency to Ahmedabad's preparations.

With the 2029 Police and Fire Games less than four years away and the 2030 Commonwealth Games six years out, the pace of infrastructure development in Ahmedabad is expected to accelerate. The 2036 Olympic bid remains at the candidature stage, with the International Olympic Committee's host-selection process ongoing. India's ability to successfully deliver the two confirmed events will likely be a key factor in strengthening its Olympic candidature.
