Madurai, Dec 8 (NationPress) Bangladesh concluded their FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025 journey on a triumphant note, winning the inaugural Challenger Trophy, introduced by FIH President Tayyab Ikram to incentivize the playoffs for positions 17-24, with a narrow 5-4 victory against Austria in Madurai on Monday.
This marks Bangladesh’s first-ever title of global significance, achieved through a stellar performance against Austria, highlighted by their prolific scorer Amirul Islam, who netted a remarkable hat-trick during the tournament's semifinals.
Amirul Islam stood out as the key player for Bangladesh in the playoff for the 17/18 positions. His contributions included a goal from a penalty corner and two successful penalty stroke conversions, propelling him to the top of the goal-scorer leaderboard with 18 goals, as he, along with Hozifa Hussain and Rakibul Hasan, helped Bangladesh establish a 3-0 lead by the 35th minute.
Austria attempted to mount a comeback, first reducing the gap to 1-3 with a goal from Andor Losonci and later narrowing it to 4-2 in the 51st minute. However, Amirul’s hat-trick goal just a minute later provided Bangladesh the cushion they needed to weather the final moments of the match.
Despite Austria's resilience, scoring through Julian Kaiser (57th) and Mateusz Nyckowiak (59th), Bangladesh managed to hold on for the victory and claim the Challenger Trophy.
